About

Biographical Note

Rusana Bardarska (b. 1967) is a Bulgarian writer who lives in Brussels. 

She graduated in philology at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and in European studies at Free University of Brussels. 

In the 90ies, Rusana worked as editor, translator, proofreader, production and copyright manager for two Bulgarian publishing houses. For one year she was selling beer. Another year she worked for the municipality of Plovdiv in the organization of the European Month of Culture, held in Plovdiv, in 1999. 

After she moved to Brussels, she edited the Bulgarian version of the test materials for two PISA studies. 

For half a year, Rusana assisted the work of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Equal Opportunities at the European Parliament. 

With the accession of Bulgarian to the EU, as laureate of two open competitions, in 2006 Rusana was recruited by the European Commission as one of the first Bulgarian translators, and subsequently, as head of unit (2009-2021). 

Currently, she holds an advisory post in the area of training and professional development.

Rusana is mother of two daughters. She is widowed. 

She speaks Bulgarian, English, French, and Russian.

Apart from the two published novels and the endlessbook online project, Rusana has authored the following:

  • The speech of mom and dad. Essay, in “Bulgaria for Advanced Learners”, Colibri Publishing house, 2020. A selection of essays and short stories of contemporary Bulgarian writers. 
  • Institutional translation. Translation for the EU. Accredited academic course at Sofia University and Plovdiv University, 2008-2011.
  • Eurolect. Keynote speech, Conference “10th anniversary of Bulgaria’s accession to the EU”, Sofia, November 2017.
  • The Yellow Guest by Hristo Smirnenski. A study on post-symbolism stylistic transformations. In “Classics and Avant-guard”, almanac of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, 2006.
  • Politically incorrect about the Roma and somewhat chaotically about other political stuff. Social and political study, 2005, LiterNet and Tema magazines. 
  • Her poems and short stories have been published in Bulgarian literary periodicals, almanacs and selections (Stranitsa, Artisanin, Ogosta, “Love for advanced learners”).
